Astilbe ‘Red Sentinel’ (Astilbe japonica) is a compact, low-maintenance perennial with striking crimson-red flower plumes on mahogany-red stems. Blooming in early to mid-summer, the feathery plumes rise above deep green, glossy, fern-like foliage, which remains attractive throughout the season. As flowers fade, they turn a rich caramel hue, adding winter interest.
Growing 45 cm tall (75 cm with flowers) and spreading 45-60 cm, this shade-loving plant thrives in organically rich, consistently moist, well-drained soil. It tolerates full sun in cool climates with adequate moisture but requires shade in hot summer areas.
Deer and rabbit resistant, it attracts butterflies and works well in borders, woodlands, near water features, and containers. No deadheading is needed, but dividing every four years ensures optimal blooms. Plumes also make excellent cut or dried flowers.
