Commonly known as Scotch heather or simply heather, is a low-growing perennial shrub native to Europe and parts of Asia. With a spreading, bushy habit, it has evergreen leaves that are tiny, scale-like, and arranged in opposite pairs along wiry stems. The foliage can vary in color from green to grey-green, and some cultivars have golden or bronze hues. Small, bell-shaped flowers appear in dense spikes, usually in late summer to early autumn (July to September). The flowers are most commonly purple or pink, but white and red cultivars also exist.
